Autonomous agents in business

Organizations evaluating autonomous agents should begin with a bounded workflow, not a broad mandate. The business case depends on measurable outcomes, clear ownership and controls that match the impact of each action.

Select a reviewable workflow

Choose a task with a defined start, finish, data boundary and human owner. Document today’s process, expected benefit, acceptable error rate, affected customers and how an operator will reverse or remediate a mistake.

  • Map decisions the agent may recommend versus perform.
  • Name the accountable process owner and escalation contact.
  • Identify regulated data, vendors and systems in scope.
  • Define a stop condition and a manual fallback.

Measure outcomes, not autonomy

Track completion quality, review time, exception rate, cost and operational incidents. More autonomous steps are not necessarily better if they increase risk or make outcomes harder to explain.

Pilot in a controlled environment with synthetic or appropriately protected data, then expand only after evidence and governance review. Record which controls were tested and what remains a known limitation.
